Pune sculptor uses 3D scanners, robots to craft Ganpati idols

Pune sculptor Viraj Khatavkar, blending tradition with technology, recreated Honaji Tarun Mandal's 125-year-old Ganesh idol using 3D scanning, reverse engineering and robotic carving. The 3-foot Shadu Mati idol, completed in a month, retains intricate detailing and is designed to last a century. A third-generation artist, Viraj, also crafted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Tokyo this year.
